FG Begins ₦50,000 Monthly Payments: Who Qualifies?

FG Begins ₦50,000 Monthly Cash Support for Vulnerable Nigerians, Explains How to Receive Payment

The Federal Government has announced the commencement of a new cash assistance programme that will provide ₦50,000 monthly to eligible vulnerable Nigerian households as part of efforts to reduce the financial pressure caused by rising living costs.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, disclosed the development in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, October 30, 2026.

The initiative, known as the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), is designed to provide immediate financial assistance to households struggling with the cost of food and other essential needs.

According to the minister, the programme forms part of President Bola Tinubu’s social protection efforts and is expected to reach millions of vulnerable Nigerians.

The government explained that selected beneficiaries would receive payments directly into their bank accounts or mobile wallets after completing a consent process through approved financial service providers.

However, the ministry did not disclose how many beneficiaries had received payments at the time of the announcement.

Why the Federal Government Introduced the ₦50,000 Payment

Doro said the intervention was introduced in response to the rising cost of food and other essential goods, which continues to place pressure on household finances.

The minister explained that the government recognised the difficulties many Nigerians were experiencing and considered direct financial assistance necessary to help vulnerable households meet immediate needs.

Under the programme, eligible households will receive ₦50,000 every month to support spending on necessities.

The payment is intended to provide short-term relief rather than replace household income or serve as a permanent solution to poverty.

The ministry also said the programme would be reviewed periodically to reflect changes in living costs.

Beneficiaries will be informed directly before any adjustment is made to the payment amount.

How Beneficiaries Will Receive the ₦50,000

The Federal Government said it is working with licensed digital financial service providers to distribute the funds securely and transparently.

According to the ministry, people selected for the programme will receive text messages from participating financial service providers requesting their consent.

Once consent has been obtained, the money will be transferred directly into the beneficiary’s designated bank account or mobile wallet.

This arrangement is intended to reduce the need for physical cash distribution and provide a traceable payment process.

The ministry said the text-message notification forms part of the official disbursement procedure.

However, Nigerians are advised to verify the source of any message before responding, particularly where a message contains a link or requests personal information.

The government has made it clear that beneficiaries should never disclose their banking PINs or Bank Verification Numbers to anyone claiming to facilitate the payment.

Who Is Eligible for the ₦50,000 Monthly Support?

The programme targets poor and vulnerable Nigerian households facing financial hardship.

According to information reported from the NERSI programme portal, beneficiaries are identified through verified national identity records and the National Social Register.

This means the intervention is designed to reach selected households through existing identification and social protection records rather than an open application process.

The government has not published a complete public list of eligible individuals or households in its initial announcement.

It has also not provided a comprehensive breakdown of beneficiary allocations by state.

As a result, Nigerians should not assume that everyone who meets a general description of financial vulnerability will automatically receive the payment.

The programme is being implemented in phases, meaning eligible households may receive notifications at different times.

FG Says Nigerians Do Not Need to Apply or Pay Registration Fees

One of the most important aspects of the announcement is the government’s warning against fraudulent registration schemes.

Doro said beneficiaries are not required to complete an application, pay any registration fee or engage an agent to access the intervention.

This means that individuals or organisations demanding money to secure a place on the beneficiary list are not following the procedure announced by the government.

The minister also warned against disclosing sensitive banking information, including PINs and BVNs.

Nigerians who receive suspicious messages or are asked to make payments can contact the official NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222.

The government has directed members of the public to obtain updates through the ministry’s official programme information channels.

Which Banks and Payment Providers Are Involved?

Information reported from the NERSI programme portal identifies ALAT by Wema Bank, MoMo Payment Service Bank and NairaGram as participating payment providers.

These providers are expected to support the transfer of funds to eligible beneficiaries.

The programme’s payment arrangements allow beneficiaries to access money through supported mobile wallets, transfer funds to bank accounts or withdraw through authorised agents.

Normal transaction charges may apply to certain services, depending on the provider and method used.

The government has not said that beneficiaries must open a new account with any particular provider to become eligible.

Anyone contacted about the programme should therefore confirm the instructions through official channels before taking action.

What Nigerians Should Know About the Programme

Although the government has announced the commencement of NERSI, several important details remain outstanding.

The initial statement did not disclose the total amount budgeted for the programme, the precise number of selected beneficiaries or how long the monthly payments will continue.

It also did not provide a state-by-state distribution timetable.

These details will be important for assessing the programme’s reach, funding and effectiveness.

The government has said the intervention will be reviewed regularly and that beneficiaries will be notified if changes are made.

For households awaiting support, the most important practical information is that selection is not based on payment to agents or registration through unofficial websites.

How the ₦50,000 Scheme Fits Into Existing Government Support

The Federal Government described NERSI as an addition to existing social protection and economic assistance programmes.

Nigeria has operated several cash transfer initiatives intended to support poor and vulnerable households.

According to figures discussed in the World Bank’s October 2026 Nigeria Development Update, the Federal Government had disbursed approximately ₦658.9 billion in direct cash transfers to 10.46 million poor and vulnerable households by September 2026.

Those figures relate to existing cash transfer interventions and should not be interpreted as payments made under the newly announced NERSI programme.

The World Bank has also highlighted the importance of expanding social protection coverage, ensuring that assistance reaches intended beneficiaries and improving the consistency of payments.

For the new programme, public reporting on the number of recipients and the amounts successfully transferred will be important in determining whether the intervention is reaching households as intended.

FG Promises Transparency and Accountability

Doro said the Federal Government remained committed to implementing the intervention transparently and ensuring that vulnerable Nigerians receive assistance without unnecessary obstacles.

The minister described the scheme as part of the administration’s wider efforts to support household resilience and economic stability.

As the programme begins, questions about beneficiary selection, payment timelines and monitoring will remain important.

For now, the government has confirmed that eligible beneficiaries will receive ₦50,000 monthly through approved digital payment channels, with no application or registration fee required.

Nigerians are advised to rely on official information and report suspicious payment demands or messages to the designated helpline.
