Otti Warns Abia Voters Against Vote-Buying Ahead of 2027

Otti Warns Abia Voters Against Trading State’s Future for Political Gifts

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has cautioned voters against allowing short-term political benefits to influence their decisions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The governor urged residents to consider the long-term consequences of their choices, warning that accepting money and other gifts in exchange for votes could affect the state’s future.

Otti spoke on Sunday at the Second Session of the Seventh Synod of the Anglican Communion, Diocese of Aba Ngwa North, held at All Saints Anglican Cathedral, Aba. He was represented at the event by his Chief of Staff, Caleb Ajagba.

According to a report by PUNCH, the governor’s message focused on the need for voters to remain vigilant as politicians intensify their engagement with communities ahead of the next election cycle.

Otti warns against vote-buying

The governor specifically mentioned cash gifts of ₦5,000 and ₦10,000, as well as items such as rice and wrappers, cautioning voters against exchanging their political choices for such temporary benefits.

He argued that voters should not allow immediate material rewards to determine decisions that could influence Abia’s development over the next four years.

Otti also warned that some politicians who had previously shown little interest in engaging with residents or religious communities were now becoming more active as the elections approached.

He urged voters, particularly members of the church community, to assess political activities carefully rather than automatically trusting politicians because of their renewed visits or calls.

His remarks come as political activity begins to build ahead of the 2027 general elections, when Nigerians will elect leaders at different levels of government.

Governor says Abia has laid foundation for development

Speaking about his administration’s record, Otti said the first three years of his government had largely focused on establishing a foundation for the state’s development.

He expressed confidence that the coming years would focus on consolidating the administration’s work and bringing further improvements to Abia.

The governor compared the process to constructing a house, arguing that a strong foundation must come before the finishing touches become visible.

He described his administration as working to address problems inherited from previous years and maintained that the state should not lose the progress he believes has been made.

Otti’s comments reflect his administration’s position that continuity in its development plans is important. However, voters will ultimately assess the government’s record and decide which candidates and policies best serve their interests at the ballot box.

Otti speaks on church development projects

The governor also addressed development projects associated with the host church, assuring the congregation that he would continue to identify with the project until its completion.

At the same time, he reiterated his administration’s position that public funds should be directed towards the development of Abia State rather than individual religious projects.

The synod’s Bishop, Rt. Rev. Nathan Kanu, said the event’s theme encouraged Christians to think carefully about issues, examine what they hear and respond with wisdom.

The theme was titled “Don’t Just Absorb It; Think It Through,” drawing inspiration from Acts 17:11–12 in the Bible.

A guest preacher, Bishop Chidi Oparajiaku of the Ohaja/Egbema Diocese, also encouraged Christians to reflect carefully on messages and events rather than take everything for granted.

The gathering was attended by political and community figures, including Labour Party officials and local government representatives.

2027 elections and the choices before Abia voters

As the next general elections approach, vote-buying and political accountability are expected to remain important issues in public debate.

Otti’s message places responsibility on voters to consider the implications of their decisions beyond the immediate benefits offered during campaigns.

For voters, evaluating candidates involves considering their promises, previous performance, plans for public services, infrastructure, employment and the broader economy.

The governor’s warning is also a reminder of the importance of citizens making independent choices at the polls. Ultimately, Abia voters will determine the state’s political direction through the electoral process.
