Lisandro Martinez Blames ‘Anger and Frustration’ for Criticism of Man Utd Hierarchy
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has explained that his strong criticism of the club’s hierarchy after the 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid came from “anger and frustration,” though he stopped short of issuing a full apology.
The Argentina international made the comments in a social media statement released on Wednesday night, a day after his post-match interviews in Madrid.
What Happened
Following United’s loss to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, Martinez publicly questioned the club’s lack of investment in the summer transfer window despite qualification for the Champions League. He specifically said he expected “more from our technical director” Jason Wilcox and more ambition from “upstairs.”
The remarks were widely described as one of the most direct public criticisms of United’s leadership by a current player in recent years.
Martinez’s Clarification
In his Instagram statement, Martinez wrote:
“After the match, I spoke out of anger and frustration at not getting the result we all wanted. Those who know me know how I live football, with passion, commitment and a huge desire to win. And when things don’t go our way, it hurts, especially when representing a club with the history and stature of Manchester United.
“My words reflect how I feel and how much I want to see this club competing for the biggest honor’s. Those high standards are part of how I see football and the responsibility that comes with wearing this shirt.
“When I talk about wanting more, I’m talking about the ambition we must all have as part of this club.”
He added that he believes in his teammates, manager Michael Carrick, and everyone working to move the club forward, and stressed that players must also demand more of themselves.
Current Situation
United have so far remained silent on the matter. Martinez is out of contract at the end of the current season, and reports suggest the club is considering its response to the public comments.
The defeat in Madrid extended United’s winless run and increased pressure on the team under Carrick.
Why This Matters
Martinez’s original comments highlighted ongoing frustration among some players about the club’s transfer strategy and overall ambition. His clarification attempts to soften the impact while still defending his desire for higher standards at Old Trafford.
Whether the episode leads to internal disciplinary action or further tensions remains to be seen as United look to stabilize their season.
